Teen becomes county's fourth fatality this year
web
posted August 4, 2008 10:20 PM
EDGEFIELD – A
Columbia teen became the
fourth fatality on Edgefield County roads Monday around 8:12 pm after
he was ejected from the Buick Le Sabre he was driving after a violent
crash. The 18-year-old young man was traveling north on Highway 25
nearing the 1100 block of Edgefield Road when the crash occurred. The
teen was found lying several yards north of the wreckage.
The highway was closed off and traffic was diverted through a nearby
mobile home park as the South Carolina Highway Patrol began their
investigation into the death. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the
crash.
The teen left the
northbound lane and began losing control about 100
yards prior to the impact area. The car began rolling and continued up
a steep eight to ten foot embankment when it struck a power pole and
then rolled back down the embankment. Debris was scattered all around
the crash scene for around thirty-five yards.
When police first arrived the teen was said to be breathing but died
moments later. Edgefield County Coroner Thurmond Burnett arrived and
pronounced the teen dead on the scene. His name is not being released
pending the notification of family members.
Coroner Burnett placed the time of death at 8:30 pm and said the cause
of death was severe body trauma. No autopsy will be performed. "He was
killed pretty much instantly."
This marks the fourth fatality for Edgefield County this year.
