Fool me once, shame on me; fool me twice,
go to jail Edgefielddaily.com web posted August 9, 2005 EDGEFIELD - Edgefield County Magistrates Court is where most arrests end up being heard. Judges Davis Parkman and Brenda Carpenter have the task of sorting out the details and the facts and coming to a just decision. Judge Carpenter has told Edgefield Daily.com in casual conversations that no matter what happens in court, one side always goes away unhappy. Unlike a lot of courts, Edgefield County Magistrate Brenda Carpenter said they try to work with people who end up getting jail time for their offenses and, “we try to work it out where they can serve their time on the weekends,” she said. That is quite a gift considering a lot of judges really do not care about how being jailed effects your family. However, some people must feel that judges forget and the Sheriff’s Department shuts down on the weekend. Take the examples of Cleveland Robertson, 31, and Jefferson Davis Parker, 54. Robertson was arrested for driving under suspension (2nd offense), open container, and operating an uninsured vehicle. Parker was charged with DUI and improper tag. Both were sentenced to serve their jail time on weekends. Friday both men found out that a nice judge gets rather terse when you fail to show up to serve your weekends until your time is served and will have you arrested, again. “I gave them weekends to serve their time and neither showed up,” Judge Carpenter said, “so they can serve it straight through.” Now both men will not have to worry about remembering to show up on weekends, they will already be there as they were arrested for contempt of Magristrate Court and remain in jail. Edgefield Daily.com would suggest that those who find themselves at the mercy of the court be grateful for the understanding our local judges have in trying to be as flexible as possible in sentencing. If you are granted the gift of just having to give up your weekends, do so. Tie a string around your finger if need be, it is a lot less painful than handcuffs and barred cell doors.
