  Edgefield melee erupts in gunfire, three arrested web posted August 9, 2008 EDGEFIELD – Edgefield and Johnston Police, in addition to Sheriff’s Deputies and the South Carolina Highway Patrol, were called to the scene of a melee that erupted with gunshots being fired and at least three arrested Friday night. The nightlong event began when a call of a noise complaint came in to dispatchers around 8:30 pm of a large crowd of people in the area of Moragne and Ellis Streets. A short time later a reported theft of speakers and electronics on Star Road brought Edgefield Police back to the area around 9:30 and they discovered the stolen items in a vehicle in the area. It was then the crowd turned on police. During the investigation shots were fired nearby causing officers to summon for backup. As police tried to calm the growing crowd, the crowd began preventing officers from gaining control of the car with the stolen goods and then two more shots rang out. Additional deputies were called to the scene as police tried to contain the situation. The South Carolina Highway Patrol also responded with at least two troopers. All responding officers were told to don their bullet proof vests before entering the scene. As the melee escalated at least one more shot was reported being fire and officers, EMS, and Troopers were told to evacuate the area. Police were able to seize the vehicle before leaving the scene. Arrested in association to the incident were Xavier Quintez Rouse, 18; Deangelo Rouse, 22; and Laprintsie Williams, 18. Charges were not available as the booking process was ongoing at the time of this report. None of those arrested were related to the gunfire. At least one of those arrested had to be tased in order to be taken into custody. Edgefield Police and the Sheriff's Office were still gathering information as of 1 am.
