Masked men shoot 21-year-old in Edgefield
web
posted August 17, 2009
EDGEFIELD – More information has been released in a shooting late Saturday
night that left a 21-year-old Edgefield man in intensive care at the
Medical
College of Georgia (MCG) after undergoing surgery early Sunday morning,
Corporal Michael Butts of the Edgefield Police Department said Sunday.
“He was shot in the lower back,” Cpl. Butts said adding that two shell
casings were found at the Edgewood Apartments, where the shooting took
place. “We don’t have a motive right now.”
Cpl. Butts said he could not release the caliber of the weapon used in
the shooting at this time.
There are no known witnesses at this time other than the victim. “What
we know right now is some people heard the shots and opened their door
to see what was going on and that’s when they saw him (the victim)
limping towards them,” Cpl. Butts said. “He came into their living room
and collapsed on the floor.” They called 911 for an ambulance but
decided to take the man in their personal car to the Edgefield County
Hospital, located a short distance away.
Investigators were able to speak with the victim for a short time
before he was rushed to the MCG Trauma Unit in Augusta.
The two suspects are described as being black males wearing white
t-shirts and wearing ski masks. One man is said to be around 5’ 11”
tall weighing approximately 250 pounds and had dreadlocks. The other
man was "taller and thinner". They fled the scene on foot and police
believe they escaped the area in an awaiting car.
Earlier reports that the men were carrying backpacks have not been
confirmed, Cpl. Butts said. “We had reports of two men with backpacks
running from the area, but right now we can’t confirm they had anything
to do with the shooting.”
The victim was at the Edgewood apartments to see his girlfriend when
the attack took place. According to available information, the two men
approached the victim and a confrontation took place. During a struggle
that ensued, the victim was able to pull the mask off one of the
attackers revealing the dreadlocks in his hair.
Police are asking anyone with information to call 803-637-5337. You can
remain anonymous while providing information.
This is the first
shooting in the Town of Edgefield this year but the second since
Wednesday in the area.
Johnston Police are investigating a shooting at the May Street
Apartments that occured on Wednesday. No one was injured in that
incident and no shell casing were found at the scene. The suspects in
that case were also described as black males wearing white t-shirts.
The two shootings are considered unrelated at this time.
