One Man Injured in Near Head-On Collision on Walker Road Bridge

web posted August 19, 2014

EDGEFIELD   The driver of a Toyota Camry headed north on Walker Road Monday afternoon was met with the driver of an oncoming Ford Lariat pickup well in his lane. As the two approached on the bridge, the driver of the Toyota got far to his right when he was struck by the truck at the front just in front of the drive's compartment. According to the damage of the vehicles, it appeared the truck went over the driver's area before landing on all four wheels and coming to a stop. The car was pinned to the guardrail and concrete barrier on the side of the bridge.

The entire roadway was blocked as emergency crews began arriving on the scene. The driver of the Toyota suffered an injury to his head and a large laceration to his left arm. He was transported by ambulance to an area hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck, who sustained no injuries in the crash, was seen dumping an ice chest with beer in it over the railing of the bridge (Below) shortly after the crash. Edgefield County Sheriff's deputies blocked traffic while the South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the collision and seized the cooler and the beer as evidence.

The driver, who was not identified on the scene, was taken into custody by the Trooper. His identity will be added to this report when it becomes available.
