Investigation requested in Bettis Park concession stand money
web
posted August 20, 2009
EDGEFIELD – According to an incident
report obtained on Wednesday, the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office has
been asked to investigate the “recreation concession stand revenue at
Bettis Park” for “cash sales that should be deposited with the County
Treasurer.” Several concerns were raised including “breech of trust,
fraud, and embezzlement”.
The request, according to the report, came in the form of an anonymous
typed letter that was delivered to the Sheriff’s Office on Monday. A
copy of the letter was not available; however, the incident report gave
a portion of the content within the narrative.
“The letter states four concerns of the writer. 1) No Book Keeping
receipts for cash sales that should be deposited with the County
Treasurer, 2) Purchases made from retail and sold to the public, 3) No
sales tax charge on sales from the concession stand, 4) Gate fee
revenues received.”
The letter also stated that there have been no deposits from concession
stand proceeds since 2006 and that was in direct violation of county
ordinance.
“They were requesting an investigation to prove no wrong doing of
breech of trust, fraud, and embezzlement.”
According to the report, the letter was received at 8:55 am on Monday,
August 17. There was no mention of the method of delivery or if there
was any additional information provided with the letter. Sheriff Adell
Dobey was unavailable for comment on Wednesday.
In past cases involving the county, the Sheriff’s Office defers such
cases to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division for investigation
(SLED) to avoid any conflict of interest. It is unknown at this time if
the matter has already been turned over to SLED or if the Sheriff’s
Office may conduct and initial investigation before handing the case
off.
