Ninth Annual Pro Rodeo at the Lazy J Arena this Weekend

Staff Report
web posted August 20, 2014

EDGEFIELD –  Get in your best “western mode” and come on out to the Sandy Oaks Ninth Annual Pro Rodeo at the Lazy J Arena this Friday and Saturday nights, Aug. 22-23. The “Lazy J” is located 10 miles west of Edgefield on Highway 23. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

Competitions will include saddle bronc, bareback bronc, calf roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling, team roping, cowgirl break-away roping and bull riding. There will also be a boot scramble for the kids during intermission.

Sandy Quarles said she and her husband Wesley, owners of The Lazy J, have one of the highest paying rodeos, as far as prize money is concerned, in the IPRA.
“We have world champion cowboys and cowgirls,” she said.

This year’s special attraction will be the 2013 World Champion Bucking Bull, “Fast and Furious.” Other special attractions will be World Champion Steer Wrestler and Calf Roper Justin Thigpen of Waycross, Ga., and IPRA World Standing All-Around Champion Shawn Minor. Stock contractor is Ken Treadway Rodeo Company.

Carnival rides and pony rides will be available before, during and after the rodeo. A western vendor, as well as food and drink vendors, will be on hand.

The Quarleses, who both have rodeo experience, started Sandy Oaks in 2006. Originally it was held in October, but three years ago it was moved up to August.
“The first year after we changed the date, we had 6,000 people attend,” said Mrs. Quarles. “Last year, we had 7,000.”

People come from all over the world to attend.

“One day I was gone somewhere and Wesley answered the phone and a gentleman was inquiring about the rodeo,” she said. “He kept asking Wesley over and over if he was sure about the dates. Wesley was starting to get a little irritated when the man said, ‘I want to bring my family and we’re coming from Germany!’”

Quarles said people have been checking in at the Edgefield Inn for a couple of weeks.
They have a new entrance this year, so they should be able to move the advance ticket people much faster, she said.

Each year, the Quarleses give away 2,000 tickets to elementary school children in McCormick, Saluda, and Edgefield County School districts.

“Our primary goal is to provide a clean, healthy activity, especially for young people,” she said. “If it keeps them off the streets for two nights a year, that’s something.”
Tickets are $10, in advance; $12, at the gate; $5, children 6-11; $9, group rate (10+ people); and $9, seniors (60+).

Ticket outlets include: Boots, Bridles and Britches (Aiken and Grovetown); Tractor Supply (Lexington); Maxwell & Halford Drugs (Johnston); SRP Federal Credit Union (Edgefield); Country Boy Farm Supply (North Augusta); Carquest Auto Parts (McCormick); The Hardware Store (Saluda); Crouch Hardware (Edgefield); Interstate Battery Systems (North Augusta); Greenwood Farms & Feed (Greenwood); Daniel Village Barber Shop (Augusta); and Cactus Flower Equi-Center (Grovetown).
