Litter complaint leads to arrest of suspected molester

web posted August 25, 2009
EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield woman calling the Sheriff’s Office to complain that two men were seen dumping trash at an unoccupied home across the street from her home has led to the arrest of 20-year-old Douglas Carter of Edgefield who is accused of criminal sexual conduct with a minor in connection to a forced sexual encounter with a 15-year-old girl in late June.

The litter complaint came in on Friday afternoon when a woman spotted two black males throwing garbage out at a home on the 1200 block of Highway 23 west. The men left the scene but the woman was able to give a description of the grey car pulling a trailer with the words, “Dis is da Carter” on the windshield.

Deputies spotted the car a short distance away and made a traffic stop to identify the occupants. It was discovered that Carter, a passenger in the car, was wanted for a sexual assault on the teen at the Woodland Apartments on June 30.

According to police reports at the time, the 15-year-old girl was visiting a family member and was sleeping on a couch when Carter knocked on the door and was allowed to enter the home. From there, reports state, he began fondling and kissing the girl, who resisted his advances.

Cater is accused of then forcing the girl into having sex until a family member walked in hearing the commotion and Carter fled the scene. After the investigation, a warrant was issued for Carter’s arrest. He evaded capture until the litter complaint was made and a traffic stop ensued.

Carter was charged with littering and criminal sexual conduct with a minor Friday afternoon and was released on Sunday on bond. The amount of bond was not available, jail officials said Monday.

The driver of the car, Leric Leonard Merriweather, 20, was charged with driving under suspension and littering and was also later released on bond.
