Edgefield County Players to Meet and Reorganize
web
posted August 25, 2009
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Players,
a group which was organized in 2004 to promote the development of a
theater in Edgefield, is holding a membership meeting at the Edgefield
County Courthouse at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night, August 27, 2009 to
reorganize and to reinvigorate its support of the theater effort which
has been led by Edgefield Regional Arts (“ERA”) during the past year.
For some time certain members of ERA have felt that the group’s recent
efforts for the theater have been so all-consuming that the promotion
of the visual arts have been neglected. Therefore at a recent
meeting of ERA, it was decided that that group should turn over the
promotion of the theater project to a group exclusively devoted to the
purpose of promoting the theater. The members present unanimously
agreed that this was the best course to follow. Therefore a
number of officers and members of the Board of Directors of the
Edgefield County Players came together and issued the call for a
meeting to reorganize and reinvigorate that organization. Many
members of ERA will join the Players and put their energy behind that
organization and its efforts.
In 2004 the Players had over 120 members who had joined in the effort
to develop the theater. At that time, the South Carolina
Department of Commerce had put into place a competitive grant program
under their “rural infrastructure fund” which was targeted at
revitalization programs like the proposed Edgefield County
Theater.
Unfortunately, for various reasons, the grant
application submitted by the Town of Edgefield for the proposed theater
project was not selected for funding. Thereafter, as a result of
not getting this grant and because of issues related to the acquisition
of the site, the theater project languished. Funds raised by the
Players from 2004 membership dues are still held by the Treasurer.
In 2008, however, Edgefield Regional Arts succeeded in getting an
option on the property and began to promote the theater once
again. Through the efforts of this organization, including
several successful oyster roasts and other functions, funds were raised
and many local citizens began to get excited about the prospects of
getting the theater built. The funds raised were placed in a
separate account and will be turned over in due course for the benefit
of the theater.
Theaters have been extraordinarily successful in
other towns in bringing about a major revitalization of commercial and
retail activity. The examples of Newberry, Abbeville and Conway
here in South Carolina have amply demonstrated that.
From almost the very point when Edgefield Regional Arts undertook the
leadership of this project last year, the economy began its downhill
slide. This has not only affected private charitable
contributions but has also seen state and local governments under
considerable budgetary pressures, meaning that funding for the theater
project has appeared increasingly difficult.
However, many
citizens recognize that a project like this is necessarily a long-term
undertaking which will require patience and persistence on the part of
supporters. As an example of this, the Heritage Corridor
Discovery Center was ten years in development. However, since
that museum opened more than five years ago, it has added immeasurably
to the Town, to Edgefield County and to the three other counties which
it has served.
Prior to the business portion of the meeting an historical skit will be
presented by
Tonya Browder, Executive Director of the Tompkins Library, of
Edgefield’s beguiling Becky Cotton, our famous husband-killer. Ms.
Browder has been researching Becky Cotton for some years and has
gained an intimate knowledge of the story which she will present in a
most entertaining fashion.
It is hoped that the revitalization of the Edgefield County Players at
its meeting this coming Thursday evening will mean that the proposed
Edgefield County Theater will have a strong and hardworking
organization exclusively devoted to developing this important amenity
in our county. The public is invited to come to the meeting, to
join the Players and to work towards making the Edgefield County
Theater a reality.
