Watson pleads guilty to murder of infant web posted August 29, 2007 EDGEFIELD – Devin Antoine Watson, 26, of Edgefield has escaped a possible death sentence by pleading guilty to a charge of murder by child abuse on Wednesday. Watson and his girlfriend Mary Christina Dey, now 21, were both charged after bringing their 13-month old son to the Edgefield County Hospital because he stopped breathing on August 5, 2003. Doctors called police when it became obvious the infant had been the victim of long-term abuse. Darrell Watson died shortly after 8 am on August 7. Watson and Dey have been held at the Edgefield County Detention Center since the death and were scheduled to go to trial on September 10. Watson faced the death penalty and Dey, due to being 17 at the time of the crime, faces life in prison. Watson entered his guilty plea to Judge Early in Clinton S.C. Wednesday afternoon. He will face a sentencing hearing on September 10 in Edgefield. The plea agreement was said to carry between 15 to 30 years in prison. Dey is currently still scheduled for trial on September 10. Sources close to the case said they expect Dey to enter a plea before trial. The murder was one of the most horrific in recent memory in the quiet Town of Edgefield. According to police reports young Darrell Watson suffered from severe bruising “over the child’s entire body as well as a severe burn-type scar on the left arm”. At the time Mary Dey, the boy’s mother, claimed that the burn was from Mr. Watson taking the child and trying to run water over him “because he wasn’t breathing” and that, “the father (Watson) mistakenly ran hot water over the child instead of cold water” which resulted in the burn. Doctors and investigators did not believe the story and believed the burn was from a household iron. At the time of the murder Dey was just 17 years old and Watson was 22. Dey became pregnant with their child when she was 15 and Watson was 20. EdgefieldDaily.com will continue to follow this story and will attend the sentencing next month. For
