Lightning strike sets home on fire

web posted August 30, 2006

EDGEFIELD – As a strong storm tracked across the county Tuesday afternoon complete with heavy rain, small hail, and several lightning strikes one home suffered a strike that ignited a fire under the home. The Edgefield Fire Department was summoned to the 80 block of Plumb Branch Road to extinguish the fire just after 4 pm.

The first fire trucks arrived a few minutes later to discover the fire confined to the crawl space under the house and firefighters quickly put the fire out after cutting a hole in the floor and other firefighters going under the house to attack the fire.

The home suffered some smoke damage but very little damage as a result of the fire. Firefighter, and Edgefield Mayor, Ken Durham said the lightning struck a tree next to the home and the lightning then is believed to have followed a gas line located nearby to the underside of the house.

Mr. Durham said the power to the home was disconnected and an electrician was trying to evaluate any damage that may have been done to the wiring. Four breakers were tripped in the strike. Firefighters were on the scene for a little over an hour and half.
