Edgefield County Senior Citizens Council Bids Griffith Farewell

web posted September 1, 2010

EDGEFIELD – Jim Griffith, executive director of the Edgefield County Senior Citizens Council, said goodbye to his position there Monday but promised that senior aging programs and public transportation will remain a part of his life. He pledged to continue to work for the improvement of both for the benefit of Edgefield County senior citizens.
“It has been a most rewarding and pleasant journey for me over the past 21 years,” he said.

“We have seen many trials and tribulations, both in the old and new Senior Center. I say to all the citizens of Edgefield County this is still one of the best senior centers in the State of South Carolina and I’m proud to take part in the driving forces behind this program. I urge you to use it as it is your center.”

Griffith was presented with a Proclamation from Mayor Andy Livingston of Johnston and Mayor Ken Durham of Edgefield. Mayor Helen Summers of Trenton could not be present because of illness.

Tony Kester, director of the State Office on Aging, presented Griffith with the Palmetto Patriot Award for his service.

In addition, Board Chairman Roy Kirkland unveiled an artist’s rendering by Beth Robertson of the Senior Citizens Center in Edgefield which had been signed by the staff and was presented to Griffith.

“I shall cherish it forever,” said Griffith. “I must say thank you to the wonderful employees of Edgefield County Senior Center and the Board of Directors who have provided guidance and support through these years of planning and developing the senior center. I love all of you and will miss daily contact with you.”

Griffith said he did not mean to single out any one employee but expressed regret that longtime employee Roberta Pugh could not be present due to illness.

“It was through her insistence and perseverance that I am in Edgefield County today,” he said.

In closing, Griffith referred to one of his favorite scriptures, Matthew 6:33: “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
“This scripture says to me that there are three priorities that contribute to the keys for success, which we have enjoyed over the past 21 years,” said Griffith. “A job provides a means of success; the family provides a reason for success; and God provides the way to success.”
