Man Walks Away from Brutal Crash

web posted September 3, 2012

EDGEFIELD – Around 1 am Saturday 911 dispatchers received calls reporting a brutal crash on Augusta Road near Cooks Produce Market with the car in a mangled mess and wrapped around a tree off the roadway. EMS, Sheriff's Deputies and firefighters were called to the scene due to unknown injuries at the time of the call.

Shortly after arriving on the scene littered with debris from the wreckage, they found the driver standing near the car with a laceration to the forehead but little else in the way of injuries. He was treated on the scene by EMT's.

According to information provided from the scene. The driver was northbound on Highway 25 when he lost control of the Mercury Grand Marquis causing the car to flip a number of times and ejecting the driver prior to it slamming into a tree with the under body of the car.

One worker on the scene said the front tires and the back tires were, "about three feet apart".

Excessive speed is considered to be a factor in the crash, with one person estimating the speed could have been as high as 100 mph. There was also speculation that one of the tires may have blown out, causing the driver to loose control.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash on no final report was available at this writing.

A second crash on Highway 25 north near Highway 283 later in the day left one man severely injured and he was air-lifted to the Trauma Center in Augusta. His condition is unknown. Details of the crash are also unknown at this time.
