Dorn Reports Campaign Signs Being Destroyed

web posted September 6, 2012

EDGEFIELD – District 1 County Councilman Norman Dorn called the Sheriff's Office on Tuesday to report a number of his campaign sings are being vandalized, damaged, and even "thrown in the woods". Dorn noted that his opponent's signs "have not been touched", the report stated.

According to the incident report, Dorn claimed the damaged signs were on Highway 378 area and Pleasant Lane Road. He did not give a number as to how many signs nor a value.

Dorn said that state workers cutting grass ran over some of the signs, some were just "run over" or moved, and others were "thrown in the woods".

Dorn's opponent, William "Bill" Smith, had the following to say after being advised of Dorn's report. "Earlier, my campaign received word that a report had been filed with the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office pertaining to my opponent’s campaign signs being vandalized or stolen. Even though Mr. Dorn is my opponent, he has the right to run a campaign that is free from this type of behavior. I suggest anyone who has knowledge of who is responsible for this senselessness to contact the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department."

Smith said he has had between 30 to 50 signs stolen or destroyed during his campaign but has not reported them. He considered it "just part of the process" in running a campaign saying it is to be expected.
