  September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month: ECH Offers Free Screenings web posted September 7, 2012 EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Hospital will be offering FREE PSA Screening Tests for the month of September to all men age 50 and older, and to men age 40 – 50 that have a family history of prostate cancer. Please come to the hospital laboratory to receive your free screening. We will forward a copy of your test results back to you and also to any physician that you may designate. These are the American Cancer Society's most recent estimates for prostate cancer in the United States for 2012: · About 241,740 new cases of prostate cancer · About 28,170 deaths from prostate cancer Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men. Nearly two thirds are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40. The average age at the time of diagnosis is about 67. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, behind only lung cancer. One man in 6 will get prostate cancer during his lifetime. And one man in 36 will die of this disease.
