Hospital CEO resigns - Ray Price: 'It's time to move on'
web
posted September 10, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Hospital CEO
Ray Price said Tuesday that he has resigned, effective October 10. The
confirmation follows on the heels of unconfirmed reports that had begun
to circulate around the county over lunch tables and store counters.
Mr. Price sent out a memo to his employees on Thursday of last week
announcing his decision, calling the employees "the best crew I have
had the privilege to work with."
Mr.
Price, who joined the hospital in July of 2006, said he offered his
resignation last month.
"I submitted my resignation on the 29th of August," he said. "It's time
for me to move on."
Tim Padgett, chairman of the Edgefield County Hospital Board of
Trustees, said the search for Mr. Price's replacement is already
underway.
"The search has just started, and it will take some time to find a
qualified candidate, but the search has already begun," he said
Tuesday. "We received (the resignation) as information and accepted it,
but we have not met formally, which we will do on the 29th of September
at our regular meeting."
Mr. Padgett said Price is to be commended for his work with the
hospital. "There is no doubt that when he came we were not doing well
financially, and he has turned that around," he said. "That's public
record. Where we had around $150,000 or $200,000 in the bank when he
arrived and now we have a nice surplus. We're doing much, much better
financially."
Mr. Price said he has not even begun to look for another position or to
even consider his future plans.
Right now he has far too much work left to do in Edgefield before
October 10. "No, I haven't even started to send out my resume yet," he
said. "That's pretty low on my list right now. I still have too much to
do here at the hospital yet." Mr. Price also said he has the utmost
faith in the employees of the hospital. "Any success that we've had
here at the hospital is totally due to the employees," he said. "One
thing you have to have at a small, rural hospital like this are fast
moving people who can adapt quickly. The people here at this hospital
do very little for themselves, but what they do is for the benefit of
the hospital."
Still, he said that the future for smaller hospitals will remain
tenuous.
"The future is going to be extremely difficult," he said. "The federal
government is doing more and more to cause as much trouble in the
health care industry so they can take it over. I was told this in the
year 2000. I'm not sure what (the board) will do or what they intend to
do. The board is talking over what they want to do, but you have a
capable staff here that will keep things on an even keel until they
decide what things need to be done. I wish this community the best of
luck. It really is a good community."
Mr. Price did not elaborate on the timing or reasoning behind his
decision to leave, but the move appears to follow months of friction
between Price and other doctors on staff at the hospital, friction
which came to a head following the announcement that Dr. Beth Gordineer
would leave the Edgefield Medical Clinic and start her own practice
just across the parking lot in the new medical plaza.
In his memo to the hospital's employees, Mr. Price said "it seems now
that I have become an impediment to the progress that needs to be made
here ... it is hoped that this impediment will be removed and progress
with the outmigration (county residents leaving for medical care)
problem can be addressed."
No firm timetable has been set for naming Mr. Price's replacement.
