Neighborhood Meeting on Slade Road Basketball Courts set for Tuesday

web posted September 13, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Mayor Ken Durham said there will be a Neighborhood Meeting on Tuesday, September 16, at the Slade Road Basketball Courts to discuss removing the chain and lock from the gate. The community meeting will begin at 5 pm. Mayor Durham said it was his hope that the courts can be reopened with the support of the surrounding community.

The basketball courts were chained shut after several complaints were called in to Edgefield Police about disturbances, fights, and other problems. Mayor Durham ordered the gates chained shut to get the attention of the community in late May and it worked.

A compromise was worked out in a similar meeting days later that kept the gate chained shut, but would allow any adult to have the gate opened by requesting permission from the Edgefield Police Department who would open the gate and then return to lock it back at the prescribed time.

Although that has worked well, Mayor Durham said it was never his intention to keep the lock and chain in place. “That’s not what I want,” he said Friday. “If they (the surrounding residents) will cooperate and let us know who is causing problems,” the lock and chain will be removed. If not, the town may keep the current policy in place or could decide to shut the court down permanently.

The meeting is open to the public and all interested parties are asked to attend.
