Edgefield NWTF Chapter to Host JAKES/Xtreme JAKES Event web posted September 16, 2006 EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will be hosting a JAKES/Xtreme JAKES field day event full of hands-on, outdoor activities on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Wild Turkey Center in Edgefield, S.C. The event costs $7 per participant, runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and includes lunch. Pre-registration is required. Activities include archery, air guns, fishing, hunter safety, geo-caching, camping and more. Expert instructors will be on hand to assist. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend. “Young people get to try new things at JAKES and Xtreme JAKES events,” said Mandy Harling, JAKES program manager. “We engage them in all kinds of outdoor activities, sports and seminars. This brings together active youth with "get up and go" attitudes that share an interest in something bigger than them – wildlife and conservation.” JAKES® (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) is the NWTF’s education and outreach program for members 17 and under. Xtreme JAKES is for teens 13-17 years old, and provides opportunities and challenges more in-line with older JAKES members’ abilities and experiences. Through local JAKES and Xtreme JAKES events held across the country, young people learn natural resource conservation and the skills they need to enjoy the outdoors. For more information, call (800) THE-NWTF or visit the NWTF Web site at http://www.nwtf.org/jakes/. To Register: Pre-registration is required. Contact JAKES program manager Mandy Harling at (800) THE-NWTF or mharling@nwtf.net. About the NWTF: In 1973, when the National Wild Turkey Federation was founded, there were an estimated 1.3 million wild turkeys and 1.5 million turkey hunters. Thanks to the work of wildlife agencies and the NWTF’s many volunteers and partners, today there are more than 7 million wild turkeys and nearly 3 million turkey hunters. Since 1985, the NWTF and its cooperators have spent more than $230 million upholding hunting traditions and conserving more than 11.3 million acres of wildlife habitat. The NWTF is a nonprofit organization with 545,000 members in 50 states, Canada, Mexico and 14 other foreign countries. It supports scientific wildlife management on public, private and corporate lands as well as wild turkey hunting as a traditional North American sport.
