Edgefield Police arrest five in two hour sweep

web posted September 18, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Police were busy Tuesday night rounding up people with outstanding warrants arresting five in a span of a little over two hours. The process began just before 8 pm when police arrested Wallace Hardy Jr., 40, for an outstanding bench warrant for driving under suspension. He was taken to the Edgefield County Detention Center for booking, a scene that began to get more common over the hours.

Willie Herbert “Billy” Lee Jr., 44, was seen walking in the parking lot of Piedmont Tech and officers arrested him on out standing General Sessions bench warrants for failure to appear on charges of burglary in the 2nd degree, possession of crack cocaine, and grand larceny. He was booked into the jail prior to 9 pm.

Within minutes Edgefield Police went to Hillcrest Street where they located Gabriel M. Holsomback, 32, and with General Sessions bench warrants for his arrest for failure to appear to answer charges of possession of 28 grams of marijuana and driving under the influence third offence. He was transported to the Detention Center just after 9 pm.

Fifteen minutes later officers arrived on Slade Road and located Eric Jones, 33, and informed him of an outstanding Family Court bench warrant for his arrest. Jones complied and was transported for booking.

The final arrest came shortly before 11 pm when an officer spotted Julius Armon Griffin, 22, standing along Blue Bird Lane. When officers advised him of a warrant for his arrest for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature Mr. Griffin began to complain the “he just got out of jail,” police reports state. He was taken in for booking.

A check of the Crime Blotter shows Mr. Griffin being arrested for a probation violation on August 21. Jail records show he was released on September 11, just six days earlier. Mr. Griffin is alleged to be one of the most violent offenders arrested in the sweep. He was wanted after allegedly beating a 20-year-old pregnant woman in early August.

According to police reports, Griffin “began to hit her in the left side of her face with a closed fist”, “slammed her to the ground pressing his knee (and) leg in her stomach.” She was transported to the Greenwood Hospital for visible and possible other injuries.

Those arrested on bench warrants will remain in custody until their trial date.
