No bond for accused kidnapper
web
posted September 19, 2008
Below: Bennett being denied bond as teen's stepfather (R) looks on.
EDGEFIELD – Accused
kidnapper Brian
Bennett, 31, who was arrested in Wentzville, Missouri on September 3,
is being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center and after a bond
hearing Thursday afternoon he will be there for a while. “I am going to
deny bond,” Magistrate Judge Brenda Carpenter told Mr. Bennett during
the hearing.
Judge Carpenter said the seriousness of the charge and the fact she
felt Mr. Bennett was a flight risk was the cause for denying the bond.
A trail date was set for December 8, although it is unlikely the trial
will be held at that time.
Ms. Hilliard’s parents attended the bond hearing but did not speak.
Allen Clark, Ms. Hilliard’s stepfather, said just before the hearing,
“I just want to see him. I want to look at him.” Though Mr. Bennett
never took his eyes off the judge, Mr. Clark (above) moved closer
window of the
hearing room seemingly to get into Mr. Bennett’s field of view.
Bennett (Left) is
accused of the kidnapping of 17-year-old Latasha Lynn
Hilliard who disappeared after agreeing to meet Mr. Bennett in person
after the two corresponded over the internet web site MySpace and then
cell phone calls.
Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigator Phil Ireland was in charge of
the investigation and eventually worked with several jurisdictions and
states before Missouri located Bennett and the girl on September 3
along interstate 24. The break in the case came when Ms. Hilliard
called home with Mr. Bennett’s cell phone while in Tennessee to say she
had been kidnapped and authorities were then able to track his
movements each time the phone was used.
Judge Carpenter said after the hearing that the only charges that have
been filed as of Thursday was the single count of kidnapping.
