Massey signs “Clean Campaign Pledge”, asks Hixon to sign on

web posted September 20, 2007
EDGEFIELD – Shane Massey has signed a “Clean Campaign Pledge” promising not to engage in any personal attacks during the Republican primary run-off for State Senate.  Mr. Massey said he also faxed a letter to Bill Hixon asking him to sign the pledge.

In the pledge Massey promises to, “only discuss the issues and my qualifications for the South Carolina State Senate,” and to, “not engage in, nor be involved with, unfair or misleading attacks up the character of an opponent.”

Massey, wrote to Hixon, said “I hope that you agree that voters deserve more than attacks, negative campaigns, and dirty politics.” He continued, “I believe that voters are sick of ‘politics as usual.’ Too many times we elect people who turn out to be typical politicians. Instead of finding the commonsense solutions to our problems, they play political games, fighting with each other and breaking promise after promise,” he continued. “That must stop. It’s to shake up Columbia.”

Bill Hixon was spotlighted in a report after a mail out by his campaign that auspiciously claimed a November 2006 report on EdgefieldDaily.com was “false”. Hixon confirmed that EdgefieldDaily.com was one of the targets of that mailer and his claims of “attacks” on his candidacy. EdgefieldDaily.com exposed the false claim by publishing the official tax records supporting our report.

Mr. Hixon has not responded to Mr. Massey’s request to sign on to the compromise to refrain from negative or false campaign tactics during the two-week run-off period at this writing. Attempts to reach Mr. Hixon for comment were unsuccessful.

Political insiders in Aiken County have said that former Democrat Senator Tommy Moore has been trying to influence voters in his former district to cross over to support Mr. Hixon in the run-off election. That is understandable since Mr. Hixon founded the “Republicans for Tommy Moore” in Democrat Tommy Moore’s unsuccessful run for Governor in 2006 against Republican Mark Sanford who won re-election handedly.

That move has drawn the ire of the South Carolina Republican Party insiders have said as Mr. Hixon is running as a “real Republican” and touting his “Republican” roots when his most notable contributions have been in the form of supporting the Democrat candidate for office.
