Driver in fatal crash identified

web posted September 20, 2007
EDGEFIELD – The identification of a driver killed in a late night crash on Stephens Road in Merriwether has been released. The fatal crash, which occurred just after midnight Tuesday, closed all traffic on the road for almost two hours as the South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the incident. Nearby residents just returning from “coon hunting” said they heard the crash and went to investigate and found the man pinned underneath the truck.

The Edgefield County Coroner’s Office said 39-year-old North Augusta resident Edgar R. Posten died from “injuries sustained in an automobile accident” and placed the time of death at 12:15 am Wednesday morning.

Rescuers and law enforcement on the scene stated Mr. Posten would have survived the crash if he had been wearing his seat belt.

Rowland Funeral Home in North Augusta is in charge of arrangements. Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, September 21, 2007 at St. John Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Robert Hartley officiating. Posten was a supervisor with Garren Construction Company in Augusta. Survivors include two sons, Corey Poston of Montmorenci, and Austin Taylor Poston of Belvedere; his parents, Ed and Marylin Poston of Belvedere, two sisters, Kareen (Mike) Riley of Atlanta and Jeannette (Michael) Gilles of Evans; two brothers, Charles (Angie) Poston (USAF) of Panama City, FL and Johnny (Suzette) Eldred of Mesquite, TX.

So far in 2007 there have been 716 fatal crashes in South Carolina resulting in 775 deaths. That is 47 more deaths this year than 2006, which showed 728 deaths from 675 crashes. Of those killed this year, 583 had access to seatbelts. Death figures include pedestrians and cyclists involved in collisions with autos.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, 351 of the deaths in car crashes, or 45%, this year were restrained at the time of the crash.
