Teen
with assualt weapon leads to arrest
web
posted September 21, 2007
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Deputies were
faced with a tense situation Wednesday night when a woman called 911 to
report being assaulted by her son. She told dispatchers her son was, at
the time, outside the house with an AR-15 assault rifle and her husband
also had a gun and was in a confrontation with the son. Deputies raced
to the scene and called for the SWAT Team to be notified of the
situation.
As the situation unfolded deputies were notified that the assault rifle
was not believed to be loaded, however, it was not known if the teen
had access to ammunition for the rifle. According to police reports,
the father drew a piston on the teen and ordered him to put down the
rifle, which he did.
Deputies arrived on the scene and took the 16-year-old teen into
custody without incident. The father left the scene prior to their
arrival and was located at a neighbor’s house a short distance away. He
was also arrested and charged with disorderly conduct in the incident
due to being intoxicated at the time. The SWAT Team was advised that
the situation was under control and did not respond to the scene.
The name of the man arrested is not being used in this report, as it
would lead to the identification of a juvenile. Authorities have not
said what charges the teen is facing in the matter or if he will be
charged as an adult, at this time.
The 16-year-old was taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice in
Columbia where he remains in custody awaiting a hearing on the matter.
