Local vet provides public service to
injured deer for animal lover

web posted September 24, 2005

EDGEFIELD – During our normal travels often times we will ride up on an accident or event taking place. This day was no different, at first. Just before arriving in Edgefield on Sweetwater Road Friday morning we found two vehicles stopped in opposite directions and assorted people on the edge of the road about a mile and a half from the bypass. It turned out a small fawn had been hit but was still alive. Self-described animal lover and County Archivist Patricia Glenn was seeking help from passerby’s so we obliged.

Mr. John Kemp of Edgefield said he felt the young doe did not have a chance. Ms. Glenn was determined to save the deer. Dr. Clarence Bagshaw DVM, she said, would help if she could just get the doe to his clinic, so, we obliged. A young man sat in the back of our blazer holding the doe down as we all traveled to the vet. After a very brief exam Dr. Bagshaw determined the fawn was injured too badly and put her to sleep. Ms. Glenn was happy it was done humanely.

Dr. Bagshaw said there was no charge for the injection, “it is a pubic service,” he said, “It’s wildlife.” Dr. Bagshaw’s office is located at 218 Augusta Road in Edgefield. His office can be reached at 803-637-0356

Editor's note: Just yards away on the other side of the road where we found everyone was another small deer which had been struck days before. The trail across the road looked heavily traveled by deer. We would suggest caution when traveling the area. Both of the deer hit were young fawns still with spots so the adults are no doubt crossing as well.
