Suspected Puppy Mill Operator Pays $350 Fine, Surrenders Animals
web posted September 24, 2012
EDGEFIELD – The owner of an alleged puppy
mill operation near Johnston has plead guilty to seven charges of ill
treatment of animals, surrenders custody of the animals taken into
custody and paid a paltry fine of $350 to absolve the charges against
her. Callie Abel appeared in Magistrate Court on Thursday before Chief
Magistrate Brenda Carpenter to enter her pleas.
Under the pleas, Abel agreed to release ownership of the animals seized
during the raid, with the exception of a few personal pets. She also
must remove all the kennels, cages, and fenced holding pens from the
property within 60 days. She is not allowed to have more than three
dogs in her possession.
Abel was represented by attorney Paul
Andrew Anderson of Aiken in the
matter.
Some of the animals will be transferred to area animal shelters and
should be ready for adoption in a week or more. The rest will be
distributed to other animal rescue facilities across the state.
Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey said the day of the
September 11 raid that it was his hope that the animals not be
returned to Abel. That much has been accomplished.
The case remains under investigation and
additional charges are
possible once all of the evidence collected, computer hard drives,
documents, and other records have been processed.
