Follow up report on Friday night car chase

web posted September 26, 2006

EDGEFIELD – As EdgefieldDaily.com reported Saturday of a car refusing to stop for an Edgefield Police Officer’s blue lights which then later crashed, the full report was obtained on Monday. According to the official report an Edgefield Officer noticed a silver Chevrolet Cobalt traveling on Macedonia Street speeding and blaring loud music. When the officer attempted to stop the car using his blue lights the car sped through the stop sign at Macedonia Street and Addison Street.

It was then the officer turned on his siren and gave chase to the car. The car then proceeded to run the stop sign at Addison and Columbia Roads making a right turn onto Columbia Road. The car then turned onto Slade Road. The car then ran the stop sign at Slade and Youngblood Roads. As the chase continued the Cobalt continued to run another stop sign at Youngblood and Star Road, continuing down Youngblood Road.

As the car approached the sharp left curve on Youngblood Road the driver crashed into a tree at 1176 Youngblood Road. When the officer arrived at the scene of the crash the driver was crawling out of the driver’s window and the officer ordered the man down on the ground and waited for back up before approaching the subject.

EMS was also called to the scene but the driver refused to be treated. At that time, Stephen Allen Mims, 20, of Bausket Street was taken into custody and transported the Edgefield County Hospital to be checked before being booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center.

Mr. Mims was charged with reckless driving, a minor in possession of beer, violating the noise ordinance, and a custody order for other charges. Mr. Mims suffered only minor injuries in the crash.
