web posted September 28, 2005

EDGEFIELD – A little after 3:00 pm Tuesday a sixteen year old lost control of his southbound truck trying to avoid hitting a deer and ended up overturning the truck on the northbound side of Sweetwater Road about three miles from Edgefield. Miraculously he walked away without injury. “When the Highway Patrolman pulled up he said he figured there would be a death involved,” Edgefield County Deputy George Dedmondt said, “so did I.”

Josh McIlvried, 16, of Merriwether said he was shaken up but felt fine. “We’re just so thankful he’s okay,” Mrs. McIlvried, Josh’s mother, said. Both parents were on the scene and very grateful it turned out the way it did, “It could have been worse if there had been someone coming in the other direction,” Mr. McIlvried said.

Sheriff’s Deputies directed traffic around the scene which tied up traffic for a little over an hour. Mr. McIlvried was wearing his seat belt which protected him Deputy Dedmondt said adding the force of the impact into the embankment would have “thrown him through the windshield.”  The scene had been cleared shortly after 4 pm.
