Barber visits Edgefield in campaign stop for Lt. Governor web posted September 28, 2006 Mr. Barber told attendees that the basis of his campaign is values he said were the backbone of South Carolina, “hard work, spiritual grounding, and fiscal responsibility.” Among his ambitions, if elected, would be to focus more on the Council on Aging across the state and bolstering the government funding of resources available through the various government agencies controlled by the Council on Aging. In addition, Mr. Barber told the gathering of Seniors in Edgefield he would also look to improve resources available under Transportation to provide for more growth of programs such as the Edgefield Senior Citizens Council and their new building. “I hope to be coming back as Lt. Governor to help in the dedication of the new building,” Mr. Barber told Jim Griffith, of the ECSCC, during his short speech. “You will,” Mr. Griffith responded. Economic Development, Barber said, should focus more on rural counties to help build partnerships with local communities and industry to provide job opportunities to all workers, young and old. According to campaign literature provided by his staff, Mr. Barber opposes any voucher program for public education, is in favor of pushing for greater economic development by transforming the Lt. Governor into an “economic ambassador” for the state, and spearheading an alternative fuel resource for South Carolina. In addition Mr. Barber supports, “reducing bureaucracy in the Office on Aging, dedicating all available money to services that will support the independence of our state’s seniors.” Mr. Barber, who is running as a Democrat, makes a concerted effort not to show his party affiliation on his web site or campaign literature. According to Mr. Barber’s web site blog, he feels he reaches across party lines on the issues. Mr. Barber will face Republican incumbent Lt. Governor Andre Bauer in the November 7, 2006 election. Also running for Lt. Governor are R. M. Campbell, of Columbia, and Henry S. Jordan, of Anderson SC. For
