National Wild Turkey Federation Xtreme JAKES event a success

EDGEFIELD – The National Wild Turkey Federation held their Xtreme JAKES event Saturday with hundreds attending. Children were divided into groups and each rotated through the many activities such as bow hunting, fishing, putting up tents, and learning how to use GPS systems among others.

The well organized event let all the youngsters spend time with each activity in a comfortable atmosphere of learning while having fun. JAKES® (Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship) is the NWTF’s education and outreach program for members 17 and under. Xtreme JAKES is for teens 13-17 years old, and provides opportunities and challenges more in-line with older JAKES members’ abilities and experiences.

The National Wild Turkey Federation, founded in 1973, has spent over $230 million upholding hunting traditions and conserving more than 11.3 million acres of wildlife habitat with its cooperators since 1985.

The NWTF is a nonprofit organization with 545,000 members in 50 states, Canada, Mexico and 14 other foreign countries. It supports scientific wildlife management on public, private and corporate lands as well as wild turkey hunting as a traditional North American sport.
