Man Accused in Beating of Johnston Woman Surrenders

web posted October 12, 2012

EDGEFIELD – A Ridge Spring man wanted in connection to the brutal beating of a Johnston woman on October 2 turned himself in at the Edgefield County Detention Center on Tuesday. Gregory William Hallback, 37, was booked on charges of assault and battery in the second degree and malicious injury to personal property and later released on a total of $5,000 in Surety bonds.

Hallback is accused in an attack that began at a home on the 400 block of Old Plank Road the night of October 2 where he is said to have attacked the woman with blows with a closed fist. At least one witness was able to stop the beating and Hallback then proceeded outside where he smashed the woman's windshield as she tried to flee the scene.

According to an incident report, Hallback then followed the woman in his vehicle ramming her vehicle a number of times causing her to run off the road. He is said to have then pulled the woman out of the vehicle and drug her down the road on her back before beating her again. He then fled the scene.

Hallback was arrested back in May for criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature from an incident involving the same woman. He later pled guilty to a lesser non-felony charge of assault and battery in the third degree and paid a fine of $425.
