Edgefield Xtreme Minors Defeat Gilbert 8-5
By John Brown
web posted October 13, 2012
EDGEFIELD – Behind the strong pitching of
Tracen Maroney, the Edgefield Xtreme Minors notched a big win Thursday
night in Batesburg. Head Coach, Jason Mims would start Maroney on the
hill and get two solid innings of work from the young right-hander. On
the night, Maroney would face 8 batters, striking out 6 while allowing
only one hit and one base on balls.
Gilbert would take an early 1-0 lead when Maroney would walk Gilbert's
lead off hitter who would later score on the teams only base hit of the
night. In the bottom half of the first inning, Edgefield would get
things going when leadoff hitter, Brandon Feagin would draw a walk,
followed by Jacob Mims being hit by a pitch. With Edgefield runners on
second and third, Tracen Maroney would step to the plate and drive a
first pitch offering deep into centerfield. Both Feagin and Mims
would score, as well as Maroney who would register an inside the park
home run.
In the Edgefield second inning, Feagin would single, Maroney would
reach on an error, Hunter Temples would draw a base on balls and Chase
Sturkie would step to the plate and single, scoring two runs. Before
the inning was over Temples would also cross the plate giving Edgefield
a 6-1 lead. In the third inning, Jacob Mims would come on in relief of
Maroney and run into trouble. Gilbert would send 9 batters to the plate
during their half of the inning, scoring 4 runs to make the score
Edgefield 6, Gilbert 5. Mims would eventually strike out two and
make a great play at home plate with catcher, Hunter Temples to tag a
Gilbert base runner out while attempting to steal home.
Needing insurance runs Edgefield would get them from Charlie Amos and
Campbell Brown. Amos would draw a walk and eventually steal home. Brown
would do the same and cross the plate on a delayed steal from third
base. Edgefield was led on offense by Tracen Maroney and Chase
Sturkie. Feagin, Mims, Maroney, Temples, Amos and Brown would all
score runs for the winners.
Head Coach, Jason Mims spoke about how proud he is of his young team
following the win. "This the first year a lot of these kids have played
real baseball and I would just like to say how much I appreciate the
players and their parents. It looks like we're peaking at just the
right time, before we head into the season ending tournament in
November."
