 Chemicals may be responsible for fire web posted October 18, 2006  EDGEFIELD
– Just after 11 am the Edgefield Fire Department was called to a
vehicle fire on Macedonia Street Tuesday morning. A town garbage truck
caught fire while collecting trash. Firemen arrived on the scene and
had the truck empty the trash out on the roadway to prevent the truck
from burning.Fireman David Coleman said chemicals evidently were placed in the garbage and when the compactor crushed the trash collect the chemical mixed igniting the fire. “You could smell the chemicals,” Mr. Coleman said relating the smell to chlorine or a similar type chemical. Town officials were going to back track the truck’s route to try to determine where the chemicals may have been inserted into the garbage. The fire was extinguished and a front-end loader was then used to place the garbage back into the truck. Firemen and town workers then cleaned the roadway of any remaining debris. The road was reopened about an hour after the fire began. For
