Wild
Turkey Federation Welcomes Area Residents to Moonlight Delight Festival
web
posted October 18, 2007
EDGEFIELD – You can take a spooky night
hike, learn about bats and other creepy creatures and play some games
at the National Wild Turkey Federation's campus in Edgefield, S.C. on
Thursday, Nov.1. This free event is geared towards getting families
together to have fun and learn about wildlife species that are
nocturnal or most active at night.
"The Moonlight Delight Festival is a fall celebration with a twist,"
says NWTF Museum Coordinator Lauren Virgo. "Visitors can tour the
museum and hike the same trails they would during the day while
learning about nocturnal wildlife through interactive stations, games
and more."
The festival will be held from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. Kids and parents
will enjoy a creepy, crawly creatures talk hosted by Sean Poppy of the
University of Georgia's Savannah River Ecology Lab, and can learn about
bats during a hike with Earlene Bracy of the U.S. Forest Service's Long
Cane Ranger District.
Families can tour the Wild Turkey Museum during an open house, take a
guided nighttime hike or enjoy many other activities including games,
face painting, scavenger hunts and costume contests.
"Visitors can come by and enjoy each activity at their own pace," says
Virgo. "And if you've never visited the Wild Turkey Museum, this is the
perfect time to check it out."
The NWTF's Winchester Museum, which was recently expanded to double its
original size from 3,500 sq. ft. to 7,200 sq. ft., features interactive
exhibits such as the world's largest turkey call. Visitors can actually
step inside the enormous turkey call and learn how to operate several
types of wild turkey calls. Other exhibits include experiencing a
prescribed fire mission from a retired USDA Forest Service helicopter,
a wildlife oddities display and many other unique attractions.
Among the original exhibits is an animated, old-time storyteller who
sits in a rocking chair and tells stories about the history of the
NWTF, turkey hunting and conservation. Nearby, an animated Cherokee
Indian shares legends and stories about the wild turkey.
For more information on the Moonlight Delight Festival, touring the
Wild Turkey Museum or volunteer opportunities at the museum, contact
NWTF Museum Coordinator Lauren Virgo at (803) 637-3106.
