Report of "Voting Machine" being Available at the Center False

web posted October 18, 2012

EDGEFIELD – Edgefield Daily began receiving calls and emails about rumors that Edgefield County Councilman Norman Dorn would make a "voting machine" available to voters at the Democrat Party Headquarters at the Community Center on Macedonia Street in Edgefield earlier this week. Then on Wednesday a listing in the Edgefield Advertiser continued spreading misinformation when it echoed the same in a "Here&There" listing in their Wednesday edition.

From the Edgefield Advertiser: "Voting Machine Available: The voting machine will be available at the Community Center next to Macedonia Baptist Church for the 2012 presidential election from 12 to 3 pm for citizens of Edgefield County. Info: call Norman Dorn at 637-3545." The listing did not give the date, which is Saturday, October 20, adding to the confusion. (emphasis added)

When Edgefield Daily sent an email to Edgefield County Voter Registration and Election Director Tricia Butler on Tuesday night asking if this rumor was true we received a call on Wednesday with a resounding "no" answer.

Dir. Butler said the machine that will be made available is a "training machine" and not a "voting machine" and will be loaded with a fake ballot - not the ballot that will be used in the November "2012 presidential election" - as stated by the Advertiser's false listing.

"This is one that we use to teach people who have never used the electronic voting machines,"  to learn how the real voting machine operates, Butler said. She added that absentee voting is done at the Voter Registration Office on Penn Street and nowhere else.

There is nothing improper about having the "dummy" machine with a "fake" ballot being used to teach voters how to operate the real voting machines used in the actual elections, Butler said.

It remains unknown where the Advertiser got their false information, but we assume it came from Councilman Dorn and they never bothered to call the Voters Registration Office to confirm the validity of the information before going to print.

As always, Edgefield Daily will continue to provide readers with accurate and factual information.
