Edgefield Police Officer stops burglary in progress

web posted October 24, 2007
EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield Police Officer on routine patrol interrupted a burglary in progress late Monday night and apprehended on of the suspects and recovered approximately $700 worth of stolen property. Just after 10 pm the officer pulled into the Star Fiber warehouse on Star Road and saw a brown pick up truck parked in the back. As he continued inside the warehouse he spotted a flashlight, which was on, lying on the floor and two men running trying to flee the building.

According to police reports, the two men ran to a door and began kicking it in an attempt to escape, but the door remained locked. At this point the two men reportedly turned and began running towards the officer who drew his weapon and ordered the two men to the ground. One of the men complied with the officer’s orders but the other continued to run and escaped trough an open door.

Additional officers and Sheriff’s Deputies arrived on the scene as back-up and aided in the arrest of Rodgrick Nicholson, 40, of the 800 block of Young Street in Johnston. Edgefield Police and a Sheriff’s Investigator found the Ford truck driven by the two men
attached to a green utility trailer in the back of the building with several items and scrap metal, some taken from the warehouse, loaded in the trailer.

Among the items listed recovered was four breaker panels, five heavy steel bars, a Whirlpool washer, electrical motors, thirty aluminum light fixtures, three “thick heavy steel plates”, among other steel and aluminum items.

The material was inventoried and photographed as evidence.

Mr. Nicholson is currently being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center on a charge of second degree burglary and is awaiting a bond hearing. Police have not been able to identify the second suspect in the case at this time. He is described as a black male, 6’ tall weighing approximately 250 pounds. He was last seen wearing a light grey shirt, light colored gloves, and dark blue pants as he fled the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Edgefield Police Department at 803-637-4060 or 803-637-5337. You do not need to reveal your identity to provide information.
