Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society releases new book

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted October 26, 2005

EDGEFIELD – "The Palatines of Londonborough" by Hortense Woodson is being released by the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society at its meeting on Sunday, November 13th, at 3:00 p. m. in the Lynch Building Annex of the Tompkins Library.

The Londonborough Township, located in present-day McCormick County on Hard Labor and Cuffytown Creeks, was laid out in 1765 for approximately 300 German Palatine settlers. These immigrants were brought to South Carolina, given aid and bounty and granted land in Londonborough after they were abandoned by their promoter in London.

The book, containing 209 pages in an 8 1/2 x 11 format, is dedicated to Miss Woodson and includes a color photograph of her. Miss Woodson was the author of many works relating to the history and genealogy of Old Edgefield. She lived most of her life at "Pine Terrace," her family home on Church Street in Edgefield. In 1983, tragedy struck her beloved home as Pine Terrace went up in flames, taking with it a large number of her cherished books and the majority of her historical and genealogical research.

One of the documents believed to have been destroyed in the fire was her manuscript, "The Palatines of Londonbourgh." However, unbeknownst to all, Miss Woodson had sent the manuscript to Mrs. Thomas C. "Jane" Dendy in Greenville, South Carolina. Mrs. Dendy held onto the manuscript until recently, when she donated it to the Old Edgefield District Genealogical Society (OEDGS), along with some of her other genealogical and historical records.

The OEDGS has now published it in its original format and entirety, with all of its flaws and blemishes. The handwritten notes in the book are mostly by Miss Woodson, but a few of them are by Mrs. Dendy. The plats that appear in the book are all hand-drawn by Miss Woodson and were taken from the Surveyor General's Office Colonial Plat Books.

The OEDGS is honored and privileged to publish Miss Woodson's work on the Palatines and commends Miss Woodson for her love and dedication to the history of Edgefield. It is through efforts such as hers that records of the past are preserved for the future.

Advance orders of the book are now being taken by contacting the OEDGS online or by their contact listings. The cost of the book is $35.00 plus $3.00 Postage and handling.
