Hunters with Disabilities Enjoy Ultimate Team Up Weekend

web posted October 26, 2006
EDGEFIELD -- Fifty-five hunters with disabilities spent a weekend of deer hunting, food and fellowship at the largest Ultimate Team Up ever held in Edgefield, S.C., Oct. 20 to Oct. 21.

The Wheelin’ Sportsmen NWTF Wild Turkey Center Ultimate Team Up marked the fifth anniversary for the Wheelin’ Sportsmen NWTF program in the Edgefield area that matches hunters with disabilities with local landowners and guides.

Stricken with polio at the age of 4, Faye Frederick has trouble walking on uneven ground and uses a cane. But despite that hindrance, her enthusiasm isn’t diminished when it comes to hunting and spending time outdoors.

“This event is fantastic,” said Frederick, of North Augusta, S.C. “The wonderful people you meet from the guides to the landowners and all the volunteers make it special. This is my fifth Ultimate Team Up and it gets better every year.”

Activities began on Friday with archery, shooting and ATV events as well as a benefit dinner and auction Friday night. Local landowners and guides took participants hunting Saturday morning and afternoon, with a break in the middle of the day for lunch and more outdoor events.

“This is the best Ultimate Team Up we’ve had in Edgefield,” said Kirk Thomas, national coordinator of Wheelin’ Sportsmen NWTF. “From the Friday night benefit dinner and auction to a full day of hunting on Saturday, we couldn’t have asked for better participants, volunteers or weather.”

Whether it is shooting, hunting, fishing or archery, there is no limit to the outdoor opportunities Wheelin’ Sportsmen NWTF can bring to a person with disabilities eager to get outside and participate in a more active lifestyle.

Wheelin’ Sportsmen NWTF provides all people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors through local chapter events nationwide. The program also provides a full-color, quarterly magazine to its members. Wheelin’ Sportsmen magazine is dedicated to the education and entertainment of outdoors enthusiasts with disabilities.
