3rd Annual Sandy Oaks Pro Rodeo thrills crowds
web
posted October 27, 2008
EDGEFIELD – Though the opening was delayed
by inclement weather Friday, the Sandy Oaks Pro Rodeo kicked off
Saturday to a large crowd and the excitement continued through Sunday.
The county’s only professional sport featured some of the nation’s top
rodeo competitors as well as local participants and the weekend weather
could not have been better.
Rodeo fans watched a wide assortment of events including Cowgirl’s
Barrel racing, steer wrestling, bareback and saddleback bronc riding,
bull riding, and more. “We had a really good turnout,” Sandy Quarles
said, who hosts the event with her husband Wesley at their ranch.
“We’ve got some of the top names here,” Sandy said pointing to Isaac
Diaz, a national championship rodeo star.
The Sandy Oaks Pro Rodeo is just one stop of the
International
Professional Rodeo Association circuit that leads to the national
titles.
One by one competitors showed their skills in the various competitions
on Sunday much to the appreciation of the crowd. Among them were steer
wrestling, which had its foundation known as “bulldogging”. According
to the history a cowboy watched as his bulldog jumped up and took down
a steer by the lip. Not to be outdone the cowboy then rode up next to a
steer and jumped off and wrested the steer to the ground. Other cowboys
watching joined in and the competition began.
Various activities would entertain attendees between the events that
included a tribute to the Native American Indians, which was the theme
of this year’s event. The drum and dance troupe of the
Comanche Indian Tribe from Colorado performed the “Eagle Dance” and
others for the crowds.
This year’s rodeo marks the third annual event and preparations are
already being made for next year.
