Edgefield man dies in crash at Edgefield trestle

web posted October 27, 2009
EDGEFIELD – A tractor-trailer truck hauling a container struck the trestle on Augusta Road early Monday morning breaking the container loose from the flatbed trailer and landing atop a Ford Ranger pickup killing the driver instantly. Deputy Coroner David Burnett identified the driver as 27-year-old Jeremy W. Jay, of Church Street, Edgefield. Mr. Burnett stated the cause of death was massive head trauma.

According to the driver of the tractor-trailer, he was northbound on Augusta Road and did not see the truck route signs for the Highway 25 Bypass.

As the driver continued northbound he entered the curve just before the trestle and though he had clearance of the 13-foot trestle. Officials stated the contained held a height of at least 14 feet causing it to break free from the trailer and land on top of Mr. Jay’s truck, which was following behind.

Deputy Coroner David Burnett said Mr. Jay was killed instantly. He was married to a Merriwether Elementary school teacher, Mr. Burnett said.

The accident closed all traffic through the area for over two hours until the vehicles were removed from the scene. A crane was brought in to lift the container off the pickup and placed it onto another trailer to be taken to another location and placed back on the original trailer so Edgefield Police and State Transport Police could measure the original height. It was then placed back on the undamaged trailer and hauled away.

The tractor-trailer driver, who said he was from Huston, Texas, was hauling the equipment container to Greenwood, SC, to be used in the transport of a massive generator that passed through Johnston recently.

He was charged with failing to obey warning signs and for the height of the load.

This marks the second fatal crash on Edgefield County roads this year.

This is the third time the trestle has been struck this year, according to information provided by officials on the scene. A tractor-trailer overturned at the trestle on July 27 after failing to obey the height restrictions and “no thru trucks” signs and struck the trestle. No one was injured in that crash.

Calls to Edgefield Police to assist truck drivers who miss the Bypass and need assistance backing away and turning around on the two-lane highway at the trestle are a frequent event.
