Phyllis Brousseau honored at opening of Edgefield Regional Arts Opening
web
posted October 28, 2008
EDGEFIELD – It is
clear that it's the
blood of the artist which moves the Brousseau family. The matriarch of
that family - painter Phyllis Brousseau - was honored on Thursday,
October 23, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. as an exhibit of 16 of her paintings
("A Tribute to Phyllis") served as the centerpiece of the Edgefield
Regional Arts' opening reception at the location of the former Rocky
Shop.
Mrs. Brousseau passed away earlier this year.
During the upcoming Christmas season the location will feature the work
of skilled ERA members and other talented artists on each Thursday
through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through December 20th.
On Christmas Week the shop will open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on December
22nd, 23rd and 24th.
Philip Brousseau (pictured above by his wife's self portrait) said he
had an important role in his wife Phyllis'
work - staying out of the way. "Yes, I just stayed out of the way,
that's right," he said with a laugh.
Mr. Brousseau said his favorite painting from his wife is that of an
old home place.
But he wasn't alone Thursday in his admiration for her skill, as more
family members were on hand.
Years earlier, Phyllis Brousseau had passed her love along to her
granddaughter, Rebecca Joye, who actually had her own work - wedding
and portrait photography - set up just across the room.
Joye remembers the countless times she walked down the trail between
her home and that of her grandparents. Once she got there she was able
to get "hands on" with her burgeoning love of art.
"I walked down that path a lot," she said. "Her basement was full of
supplies and creative things. Grammy definitely had all the stuff for
me to get into."
It's the continued work of her family that will mark Mrs. Brousseau's
legacy for years to come.
Rebecca Joye's work may be viewed at http://www.rebeccajoye.com.
