Congressman
Barrett visits Edgefield in support of Shane Massey
web
posted October 29, 2007
Below: US Rep. Gresham Barrett
EDGEFIELD – US House
Rep. Gresham Barrett
was in Edgefield on Saturday attending a “Meet and Greet” for District
25 State Senate candidate Shane Massey. “What a beautiful day,
what a beautiful state, and what a beautiful town. Thank you for being
here,” Rep. Barrett said after being introduced. “I’m excited to be
here today, and the reason I’m excited is for that gentleman right back
there (Shane Massey).”
“He understands that you can spend your money better than we can,” Rep.
Barrett said. “He understands a smaller more effective government is
where we need to be. He understands that the people run the show, not
the politicians.”
Rep. Barrett said Shane Massey could, “really make a difference in
South Carolina,” and thanked everyone for their support in his
candidacy. Barrett said he wanted everyone attending to promise that
they would each contact five people and get them to vote and each of
them to contact five people to do the same. “It will make a
difference,” Rep. Barrett said before introducing, “the next state
senator in this area – Shane Massey”.
Mr. Massey and his
lovely wife Blair (Pictured left) took the floor to a standing ovation.
Mr.
Massey thanked the large crowd for attending and thanked Rep. Gresham
Barrett for his service, “Gresham has been doing a great job for us in
Washington (D.C.),” which was met with an extended applause.
Mr. Massey thanked those attending the event and others not present who
have worked to get him through the primaries and into the election on
November 6. “If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be here,” Mr. Massey
said
One of the things learned on the campaign trail, Massey said was, “I
think it’s
important politicians remember who they represent,” Mr. Massey said
that he included his cell phone number on every piece of
campaign literature mailed out. “I put it on there because I think it
is important to be assessable. I don’t know how you represent people if
you don’t listen to them.”
“That’s a very important thing to me. That is to be responsive to the
people and try to represent you the best I can,” Massey said.
Mr. Massey went on to say that turn out was “key” in the election and
that only ten percent of voters turned out for the primary and the
following run-off. “When only ten per cent turn out, you don’t know
what is going to happen,” Massey said and repeated Rep. Barrett’s call
to get people to get out and vote. “No matter what we do, if people
don’t turn out to vote it doesn’t matter,” Massey said.
