Edgefield
deals with power outage and possible Hospital fire Monday morning
web
posted October 30, 2007
EDGEFIELD – A limb
falling on a power line
on Railroad Avenue started a chain of events that had the Edgefield
County Sheriff’s Office, Edgefield Police and Fire Departments, and the
Trenton Fire Department called to service. The power line gave way
under the weight of the limb and caused one of the transformers on the
pole to erupt in flames around 11 am Monday and knocked out power from
Railroad Ave to the entire Edgefield Town Square. While Edgefield
firefighters were arriving on the scene another call came in of a
possible fire at the Edgefield Hospital and the patients were being
evacuated.
Emergency personnel rerouted almost all units to the hospital and asked
dispatchers to call for aid from the Trenton Fire Department. The smoke
was contained to the Emergency Room and Physical Therapy areas of the
hospital but the source was unknown.

Patients were said
to have been evacuated in less than ten minutes and
were taken to the nearby Medical Clinic until the building could be
rendered safe to enter. Firemen found that a motor in an “air handler”
burned and the resulting smoke filled the air vents leading to nearby
areas.
The building was cleared of all smoke and patients began returning to
their respective rooms shortly after noon.
The Sheriff’s Office was also a victim in the power outage leaving the
main office without power. The E911 dispatch remained running with the
aid of emergency generators that are in place for such emergencies. The
power was restored to the area by 1:30 that afternoon.
The lunch hour crowd that converges on the square for lunch tapered off
a bit owners said. Wayne Luquire, owner of the Ten Governors
Café, said the patrons were fewer than normal. “We don’t have
power,” he said, “but we have food.” Cooks forged on with the meals due
to the eatery’s use of gas stoves.
Workers at the Edgefield Billiard Parlor, commonly called “the pool
room”, said business kept going even though they were limited to
cooking hamburgers as the grill top was gas fueled, but there were no
french fries or other fried foods that required electricity to function.
The power outage also kept Edgefield Police and a Sheriff’s Deputy busy
directing traffic at the intersection at the Courthouse until power was
restored and Department of Transportation workers could reset the
lights.
