Turkey Federation Welcomes Area Residents to Moonlight Delight Festival

web posted October 30, 2008
EDGEFIELD – The National Wild Turkey Federation invites you and your family to join us for the sixth annual Moonlight Delight Festival on Thursday, Nov. 6 at the Wild Turkey Center in Edgefield, S.C., from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. This free event is geared toward getting families together to have fun and learn about wildlife species that are nocturnal or most active at night. “We’re going to answer a lot of different questions kids ask most often when they visit the NWTF, and we’re going to do it in a really creative way after dark,” says Stephanie Drennan, NWTF’s interpretive programs coordinator.

“Our hands-on interactive stations offer a fun and unique learning experience.”

During the festival, families can attend the “Zombie Party” and learn all about the workings of animal brains. They’ll also have a chance to listen in on a creepy, crawly creatures talk hosted by Sean Poppy of the University of Georgia's Savannah River Ecology Lab. This talk will feature many live critters that live in our own backyards. Families can also learn about bats at an interactive station along the night hike trail with Earlene Bracy of the U.S. Forest Service's Long Cane Ranger District.

"The Moonlight Delight Festival is a fall celebration with a twist," says NWTF Museum Coordinator Lauren Virgo. "Visitors can tour the museum and hike the same trails they would during the day while learning about nocturnal wildlife through interactive stations, games and more."

The event offers something for kids of all ages and is designed to get families together to “have fun and learn about the weird, gross and creepy side of nature,” Drennan said. “The NWTF’s Winchester Wild Turkey Museum will be open for kids and their parents to explore with the BOO–seum Scavenger Hunt.”

There will be also be costume contest, an educational night hike and hay ride, face painting, games, arts and crafts and prizes. Families can come and enjoy each activity at their own pace.

For those who have never seen the Winchester Museum, this is a great time to check it out.  The museum is the only one of its kind dedicated to the restoration, management and hunting of the wild turkey. It features interactive exhibits such as the world's largest turkey call. Visitors can actually step inside the enormous turkey call and learn how to operate several types of wild turkey calls. Other exhibits include experiencing a prescribed fire mission from a retired USDA Forest Service helicopter, a wildlife oddities display, an animated Cherokee Indian that shares legends and stories and many other unique attractions.

Donations are appreciated and will help to keep museum programs alive. A photographer will be on hand to capture the event and will be selling prints for $5 or three prints for $10. Pizza and drinks will also be for sale. Proceeds from the photo and pizza sales will benefit Relay for Life.

For more information on the Moonlight Delight Festival, touring the Wild Turkey Center’s Museum or volunteer opportunities at the museum, contact NWTF Interpretive Programs Coordinator Stephanie Drennan at (803) 637-3106.
