Three
bodies discovered in apparent double murder-suicide in Edgefield

EDGEFIELD – Three
people are dead in what
authorities are referring to as a double murder-suicide at a home on
the 200 block of Pickens Street in Edgefield. 911 received the call
from a neighbor around 4:48pm stating that the three bodies had been
discovered. Edgefield Police and Sheriff’s Deputies raced to the scene
and found the bodies of a man, a woman, and a female teenager.
According to Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie Carter the three appeared to
have died from gunshot wounds, but that will be determined after the
autopsy. Edgefield Coroner Thurmond Burnett said the deaths probably
occurred sometime Tuesday morning.
Chief Carter said the grandmother discovered the bodies when she came
to the home and made entry. A neighbor across the street, Jamie Wise,
said he made the call to 911. “I walked out to get my mail and I saw a
woman with some kids keep knocking on the door. I guess she got in some
how and came out screaming they were all dead.” He said the woman was
extremely upset and he then called police. None of the other children
entered the home.
Neighbors said the
husband took one of the children to school on
Tuesday morning and returned to the home. What transpired next is what
police are trying to piece together and they are staying tightlipped on
what evidence they have so far. The names of the victims have not been
released pending the notification of family members.
The bodies were found in separate rooms, two bodies in one room and one
body in another. Chief Carter would not say who they suspected to be
the shooter at this point of the investigation or what type of weapon
that was used.
There were at least three additional children in the family. The
youngest two were with the grandmother and a third was dropped off from
a ride to school and was waiting in the yard due to the house being
locked. The children are staying with nearby family members at the
present time.
Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey said he wished the express his
condolences to the family members. “There are several families that
have been affected by this tragedy.”
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division’s (SLED) forensic team was
still processing the scene into the night before the bodies would
allowed to be moved from the scene.
One neighbor stated the family had just returned from a vacation on
Sunday. The family has lived in the white colonial home for close to
two years.
Coroner Burnett said the autopsy would be conducted Wednesday at 10 am
in Newberry and he would be able to provide more information at that
time. EdgefieldDaily.com will place the information online as soon as
it becomes available.
The murders are the first in Edgefield County this year.
A total of twelve deaths have been reported this year. Two from
horseback incidents, one from an industrial event, six traffic
fatalities and now the three in the murder-suicide.
