check scams found in Edgefield
web
posted October 31, 2007
EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield woman gave
EdgefieldDaily.com a letter and a check for $2,500 that came in the
mail to her daughter and asked if it was a possible scam. The enclosed
letter stated that a Company named ICM was hiring for a “Quality
Assurance Analyst” and all they asked was that she make a money
transfer and then send in a report about the company “Money Gram” which
was to be used for the transfer. In return, she would keep $250 of the
$2,500 check that was also enclosed.
The $2,500 check is to be deposited into the woman’s bank account and
then she is to withdraw $2,250 ($2,150 to be used in the transfer and
$100 to cover the cost of the transfer) and the remaining $250 is to be
considered payment for the “training exercise”.

In the end, the woman will be out the entire $2,500 when the check
comes back as fake.
EdgefieldDaily.com has reported several of the scams making their way
into Edgefield County and Edgefield Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy
Doran has said previously he is currently working several similar cases
in the county.
The scammers want you to send the money out of the country because they
know they are out of the reach of law enforcement’s ability to make an
arrest, even if they are able to ascertain who the culprit is.
If someone you do not know sends you a check, promises to give you
money for cashing the check, and then send them part of it to another
country, it is a scam.
The envelope, letters, and check will be turned over to the Sheriff’s
Office on Wednesday along with the woman’s name so a report can be
filed in the matter. The letter was postmarked from Canada with no
return address listed.
The woman said she believed the scammers were using information
obtained in college applications. “I just think people around Edgefield
need to know this is happening here.”
