Father
noted as suspect in double murder-suicide
web
posted November 1, 2007
EDGEFIELD – More information is being
released and uncovered since the tragic double
murder-suicide on
Pickens Street in Edgefield on Tuesday. Edgefield County Coroner
Thurmond Burnett said the identities of the family members are Robert
Herring, 44, his wife Lesley Arangilan, 34, and Jade Arangilan, 17.
Autopsies were performed in Newberry on Wednesday morning bringing more
information pointing to Mr. Herring as the perpetrator of the
heinous killings.
Mr. Burnett said Lesley Arangilan and her daughter Jade were both shot
twice, once in the chest area and once in the head. After the murders
Mr. Herring then tuned the gun on himself and fired one shot into the
back of his head. Mr. Herring was found in the bedroom with his wife
and the stepdaughter was found in a separate bedroom authorities said.
All three died instantly from the wounds.
No motive has been established at this time and the case remains under
investigation.
Three of the children that lived in the home are currently staying with
relatives.
Edgefield Police sealed the home on Wednesday with an order from
Edgefield Probate Judge Bobby Peeler. Family members have already
talked with the judge in regards to items needed for the children.
Judge Peeler said a cleaning crew would be allowed to enter the home at
9 am Thursday with an escort by Probate Court officials and the
Edgefield Police Department. Afterwards fathers of the remaining
children will be allowed to enter the home with a similar escort to
retrieve clothing and other person items belonging to the children.
“They (the fathers of the remaining children) will be bringing in a
list to the court and once it’s approved they will be allowed to
retrieve only those items from the home,” Peeler said adding that there
are several families involved in the aftermath.
Edgefield residents were shocked as the news spread across the
community and county and conversations were centered on the tragedy.
Most conversations also included a quote published by the Augusta
Chronicle that said E911 operators taking the call asked the caller to
enter the crime scene.
Augusta Chronicle: "I made the 911 call," neighbor James Wise said. "A
woman came out screaming. She told me that they were all dead.
Surprisingly, 911 asked me to go into the home and confirm that there
were three dead bodies in the home. I certainly didn't want to go in."
Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey was advised of the statement
moments later and had the recording of the call reviewed and informed
media on the scene that the statement was never made. Edgefield Police
Chief Ronnie Carter, whose department is in charge of the investigation
said Wednesday, “We confirmed it (the claim) is false.”
The murders are believed to have occurred after 7:45 am Tuesday and
both victims were still in their respective beds when they were shot.
The bodies were discovered around 4:48 pm.
