The Indians of the Old Edgefield District
web
posted November 5, 2009
EDGEFIELD – A Presentation to the Old
Edgefield District Genealogical Society will be held November 8, 2009.
This will be an overview of the history of those American Indian tribes
associated with the Old Edgefield District. The background of the
pre-historic Native Americans will be explored with some discussion of
Indian artifacts. In this portion of the presentation, the
Stallings Island people and their culture will be reviewed.
Most of the presentation will center on the historic Indians – that is,
those who were here when the first Europeans arrived and about whom we
have written accounts. The story of Cofitachique and DeSoto will
be reviewed and the traditional location of Cofitachique on the
Savannah River at Silver Island will be defended. The interface
of Dr. Henry Woodward with the Indians of this vicinity in the 1670's
will also be explored. Other tribes which will be discussed
include the Yamassees, the Westos, the Savannahs, the Euchees (Yuchis),
the Creeks, the Cherokees, the Saludas and the Chickasaws.
The Indian trade and its role in Colonial South Carolina will be
discussed, with some focus on the Indian traders, including George
Galphin and James Adair, and their relationship with the Indians.
A portion of the presentation will also cover the outbreak of
hostilities with the Indians, including highlights of the 1751 massacre
of the Isaac Cloud family at Ridge Spring, the murder of Ulrick Tobler
at Beech Island, the Calhoun massacre at the Long Canes and other
hostilities of the Cherokee War.
The questions of what happened to the Indians, and how many of them
were integrated into the current population will also be explored.
Finally, the presentation will end with a discussion of the sources for
additional information about the Native Americans of this region.
