Massey confident: “I think the numbers are that we won”

WJBF News 6 Reporter Joy Howe on Wednesday

EDGEFIELD – A day after the election for the District 25 Senate race came to an end Republican Shane Massey said he remains confident he will be declared the winner but will wait until the state certifies the results to claim the seat. With reports of the final count showing a 150-vote advantage, “I think the numbers are that we won,” Massey said. However, Mr. Massey said he would wait until Friday to make any official statement towards claims of the seat.

Under state law the results have to be certified by 1 pm Friday and it will be then that Mr. Massey and Mr. Clyburn will learn if there will be a mandatory recount. Mr. Massey said with the vote totals available the margin seems to be above the one per cent that would make a recount mandatory.

On Monday Mr. Massey, joined by Rep. Don Smith and SC Republican Party Executive Director Hogan Gidley, visited the Edgefield County Election Office, and others, to verify the returns. They will be returning on Friday when the Edgefield County Election Commission arrives to certify the results, initially planned for Thursday.

Edgefield County Voter Registration Director Trish Butler said she did not expect any changes in the vote totals from Edgefield County, which Massey won handedly. “We don’t think anything will change,” she said, “we try real hard to make sure everything is done right.” Butler said there were “two or three failsafe” votes that would be examined on Friday. Failsafe votes are cast when there is a problem with the voter's registration.

Mr. Massey said he is eager for the certification of the results, “So I can get sworn in and get to work.” When asked how he would handle the job taking over from long-time Senator Tommy Moore, who served almost 30 years in office Massey said, “I’m not going to be Tommy Moore, I’m going to be Shane Massey,” adding that he will represent all constituents, Republican and Democrat.

Rep. Bill Clyburn was unable to be reached on Wednesday; however, Phil Bailey, Mr. Clyburn’s official spokesman said, “nothing has changed.” Mr. Bailey said that Mr. Clyburn was waiting until the election to be certified before making any further decisions. When asked if the results stayed at the present tallies if a challenge would be made for a recount he said, “I’m not going to comment.”  Bailey said Mr. Clyburn was very pleased with his performance in election and said Mr. Massey and Mr. Clyburn were both, “very friendly on the campaign trail towards one another.”

According to the state election commission the present vote totals show Mr. Massey with a 150-vote lead with Massey collecting 7,153 votes to Clyburn’s 7,003, just over the one per cent mark that would trigger a mandatory recount.

EdgefieldDaily.com will be attending the certification of the vote tally in Edgefield on Friday.
