Woman Reports Hearing Explosion then Fire

web posted November 9, 2012

EDGEFIELD – A Youngblood Road woman called 911 around 2:30 Thursday afternoon to report hearing an explosion next to house and then looking out to see flames shooting up in the air. The Edgefield Fire Department raced to the scene and extinguished the remaining fire in a cast iron cooker and a burned propane tank located right next to the house.

According to information gathered on the scene, the man was preparing to do some frying in the cast iron pot and left it unattended for a short while. The oil became too hot and ignited. As the oil spilled over it burned the line between the nearby propane tank blowing it back on its side and shooting flames up the side of the home until all the gas had been expelled.

The fire was quickly extinguished, however, the flames melted vinyl siding and overhands on the side of the home. Luckily it did not set the home on fire.

After inspecting the home for damage or possible hot spots the fire department and Sheriff's Office cleared the scene about a half hour later.
