Counties certify election results; Massey keeps majority of votes

Commissioner David Satcher
EDGEFIELD – As the Edgefield Election Commission met on Friday to certify the results of the District 25 Senate race Democrat Bill Clyburn picked up votes and Shane Massey saw votes taken away. When the certification was over the margin of victory for Shane Massey dwindled from 150 to 138. Voter Registration Director Trish Butler made the final announcement for Edgefield County results, “We are certifying Mr. Massey with 2,619 and Mr. Clyburn 2,184 votes.”

As the process continued across the senate district the final result showed Shane Massey with 7,152 and Rep. Bill Clyburn with 7,014, just enough to trigger the mandatory recount by .02%. The recount by the State Election Commission will take place next week and the official results will be announced by Friday. Election officials said once an election has been certified using electronic voting the results have not changed during a recount.

Rep. Bill Clyburn has still not conceded the election to Republican Shane Massey in spite of the 138 vote lead by Massey. Clyburn said Friday in Aiken that even though he knows he does not have the votes needed to win, “in all fairness to the voter, every vote needs to be counted.”

However, Republican Shane Massey had a different view as he saw two votes cast in the Merriwether 1 precinct taken away. “They were talking about voters being disenfranchised in Johnston and now they are taking votes away from people,” Massey said. The problem arose as three voters did not sign the register before voting leaving the precinct having 477 votes cast and only 474 signing.

Due to the error the election commission said the loss had to be placed equally against both candidates, yet the only candidate to lose any votes was Mr. Massey. That drew an objection by Mr. Massey who argued that no objection was lodged at the time of the election as required by law. That objection will be taken into consideration when the recount is held next week.

Mr. Massey has already claimed victory in the election and said he is awaiting the formalities to be completed so he could be sworn in and begin working for the district in Columbia.
